In Memorium – Dennis Haydock

February 16th, 2017 | No Comments

Sadly, in October 2016, the branch lost one of its most distinguished members, Dennis Haydock. Dennis was a much loved member of the association who fought with the Guards Armoured Division in World War Two. Dennis was the gunner in a Sherman tank and was wounded twice, both times by German anti-tank guns, once during the Normandy campaign, and then again in Holland. He was an active member of the Normandy Veterans Association and revisited Normandy on a number of occasions. Our Treasurer, Ernest Sawdon, was proud to stand by Dennis in May 2016 at the Yorkshire Air Museum, when Dennis was awarded his Legion d’Honneur from the French government, in grateful thanks for the part he played in the liberation of France in 1944. Dennis was cared for until the end by his niece and members of the York Branch welfare team. He will be sadly missed and remembered with pride by all who knew him. Rest in Peace Dennis, and stand easy.
